February 2, 1865—The territorial assembly passes an act to incorporate the Historical Society of Montana.March 4, 1865—Society President W. F. Sanders advertises for the first public event at the Society, a lecture by a local judge. The event is held in a local church.
March 25, 1865—The Historical Society is officially organized with elected officers.
